While geography and the amount of cross-border product would prompt one to assume trade should be chummy between Canada and the US, Canada's tariff policy over the past decades proves otherwise, and is an underlying cause of Trump's approach on trade with your nation. Remedy that, and I'm confident the concerns you note quickly will resolve.
Canada is 1/10th the US economically, and 1/10th the population. Should our efforts not be judged on that scale — what we're contributing per person? And is it not fair to want to hold on to a few fundamental, traditional and cultural industries, such as the example you gave of dairy farming.
The Trump doctrine is that a nation should be able to make some things for itself for practical, protective and pride reasons. Shouldn't that be true of all nations?
If Canada fell into too much complacency we wouldn't even be in a position to produce milk and eggs for ourselves. Would you really wish that?
The fair way to look at all this is to let each nation have a basic bread basket of productive capacity that defines it as a resilient and prosperous nation able to stand by itself and contribute to other nations in times of need, where each nation can contribute to the limit of its capacity.
Reason would say, on a per capita basis, each citizen of a nation could trade fairly, in a balanced way.
But, to our credit, each citizen in Canada is buying 7 times from the US, what the US buys from us. We're doing our best and pulling far more than our weight under the current arrangement.
