Halifax 100 !
Imagineā¦
100 km of commuter rail as good, usable, and useful as we had 100 years ago.
Imagine 100 km of useful commuter rail connecting a Grand Central Station and Hotel in Halifax to the heart of Nova Scotia.
Itās not hard to imagine. The Central station stood from 1878 to 1917. It was destroyed with the Explosion.
The line failed as a commercial pursuit and then failed again as a government agency. If the highway system of today was run this way it would fail too. The larger failure is that of imagination. We continue to take a first little pig view of our transportation and infrastructure systems.
The biggest mistake in economics said Henry Hazlitt nearly a century ago, is taking too narrow and too short-term a view and considering too few people and groups in decision-making.
Today we could add one more stop to this line⦠at the airport.
And, because itās my history, I would call the Rocky Lake stop Waverley Station.
How would the culture, style, economy, and development of Nova Scotia change if we had this 100 km of rail?
